Cerebral Palsy Flashcards
Definition of Cerebral Palsy
Abnormal posture and movement. (Non-Progressive)
What are the 6 body segments affected by cerebral palsy?
Monoplegia, Diplegia, Hemiplegia, Paraplegia, Triplegia, Quadriplegia
What are the 3 Neuromotor Classifications?
Spasticity, Athetosis, Ataxia
What is spasticity?
Too much muscle tone
What causes spasticity?
Damage to the cerebrum
What are 5 characteristics of spasticity?
hypertonicity, jerky movements, limited ROM, Scissoring Gait, and a hyperactive stretch reflex
What does spasticity affect?
flexors, internal rotators, and adductor muscles
What is Athetosis?
mixed muscle tone (hyper and hypotonic)
What causes Athetosis? (Duck-like curve of spine)
Damage to the Basal Ganglia (controls large muscle movement)
What type of movements do people affected by athetosis make?
Slow writhing, exaggerated, uncoordinated movements
What is Ataxia?
Too little muscle tone (hypotonic)
What causes Ataxia?
Damage to cerebellum
What are 3 characteristics of Ataxia?
Floppy, Clumsy, drunken-like gait
How many functional classifications of sports does cerebral palsy have?
8…1 being severe spasticity (motorized wheelchair) to 8 (minimal spasticity - runs with slight limp)
What is the proper handling of someone with cerebral palsy?
Head in midline, body symmetrical, body alignment, use proximal joints not limbs, slow rocking movements
