Cerebral Cortices Flashcards
Where can the Prefrontal Cortex be found?
Most rostral part of frontal lobe; anterior to Primary Motor Cortex and Supplementary Motor Cortex
What is the modality and function of the Prefrontal Cortex?
Multimodal
Motor expression of emotions and behaviour
Exploration of the environment,
Focus attention
What makes up the Secondary Motor Cortex?
Premotor Cortex Supplementary Motor Cortex Frontal Eye field Broca's area Primary Gustatory Cortex
Where can the Premotor Cortex be found?
posterior portion of middle & inferior frontal gyri, lateral surface
What is the function of the Premotor Cortex
integrates sensory information into motor plans,
anticipates voluntary movement, coordinating on-going movements
Where can the Supplementary Motor Cortex be found?
posterior, medial portion of superior frontal gyrus; directly anterior to precentral sulcus
What is the function of the Supplementary Motor Cortex
Involved in planning (mental rehearsal of movement), bilateral coordination
Require sensory input as guidance to modulate motor plans
Work closely with basal ganglia for initiation of movement
Where can the frontal eye field be found?
portion of middle frontal gyrus just rostral to premotor
What is the function of the frontal eye field
Coordinates eye movement
Where can the Broca’s area be found?
triangular & opercular area of inferior frontal gyrus
What is the function of the Broca’s area
Production of speech
Where can the primary gustatory cortex be found?
frontal operculum and anterior insula
What is the function of the primary gustatory cortex
Perception of taste
Where can the Primary Motor Cortex be found?
Precentral gyrus
What is the modality and function of the primary motor cortex?
Unimodal
Receives motor plans from premotor cortices (SMC and PMC) to execute goal-directed movements - contributes to pyramidal pathway
