cerebellum Flashcards
describe the superior cerebellar peduncle
efferent pathway to red nucleus and cortex via the hypothalamus and superior colliculus
Describe the inferior cerebellar peduncle
carries info to and from the spinal cord and proprioceptive info to and from the vestibular nuclei, infro about what is going on in the outside world goes through this tract
describe the middle cerebellar peduncle
most fibres originate in the pons, the pons receives input from several sources, largest input from the cortex.
give the anatomical subdivisions of the cerebellum
anterior lobe posterior lobe, floccculonodular lobe and primary and posterio fissures
give the functional subdivisions of the cerebellum
flocculonodular lobe, the central vermis intermediate and lateral zones
give the divisions of the CB by input
Vestibulocerebellum
Spinocerebellum
Cerebrocerebellum
explain the vestibulocerebellum
floculonodular lobe. imput directly from the primary vestibular afferents, output to the vestibular nucleus. controls eye movement, balance and posture
explain the spinocerebellum
the vermis: receives visual, auditory, vestibular and somatic info from the head and proximal musculatuer. projects via the fastigial nucleus to cortical and brain stem regions. controls posture, locomotion eye movement and gaze.
the intermediate hemispheres, receives somatosensory input from the limbs, projects via the interposed nucleus to lateral and corticospinal and rubrospinal systems, controls distal muscles.
explain the cerebrocerebellum
largest. receives input from cerebral corext. output via dentate nucleus to motor, pre-motor and prefrontal areas. Involved in planning and rehearsing complex motor tasks and measuring movement errors
describe the external layer of the CB
consists of the cell bodies of the inhibitory interneurons, the stellate and basket cells, the excitatory axons of granule cells and dendrites of inhibitory purkinje cells. axons of the granule cells are parralel to parralel fibres and dendrites of purkinje cells are perpendicular to this.
explain the purkinje cell layer
this layer is only as think as purkinje cell body (59-80nm) Purkinje cells are only output from CB.
explain the Granular layer
granule cells and golgi interneurons, the mossy fibres main input into the CB terminate here, the terminals of thes mossy fibres contact granule cells and this is called cerebellar glomeruli.
