Cerebellum Flashcards
What is the cerebellum’s important roles?
Motor function
Co-ordination, precision and timing of movements
Motor learning
Structure of cerebellum?
2 hemispheres connected by the vermis
What is the vermis?
A narrow midline area, that connects right and left hemisphere of cerebellum
Name the anatomical divisions of the cerebellum.
Anterior lobe
Posterior lobe
Flocconodular lobe
What’s the blood supply of the cerebellum?
3 paired arteries
Superior cerebellar
Anterior inferior cerebellar
Posterior inferior cerebellar
Venous drainage of cerebellum?
Superior & inferior cerebellar veins
Where do the veins of the cerebellum drain?
Into transverse and sigmoid sinuses
Does the cerebellum initiate movement?
No, pre-central motor gyrus does
Which are the two most dominant types of neuron in the cerebellar system?
Purkinje cells
Granule cells
Name the 3 types of axons that play a dominant role in the cerebellum?
Mossy fibres
Climbing fibres
Parallel fibres
What are cerebellar peduncles?
Fibre bundles that carry the input and output of the cerebellum
Name the cerebellar peduncles?
Inferior
Middle
Superior
Which peduncle(s) are most of the inputs of the cerebellum conveyed?
Inferior and middle
Which peduncle(s) are most of the outputs of the cerebellum conveyed?
Superior
Are inputs and outputs of the cerebellum Ipsilateral or contralateral?
Ipsilateral
What are the symptoms of cerebellar damage?
DANISH
Dysdiadokinesia & Dysmetria
Ataxia
Nystagmus
Intention tremor
Slurred speech
Hypotonia
What is dysdiadokinesia?
Inability to perform rapid alternating movements
What is dysmetria?
A lack of coordination of movement typified by the undershoot or overshoot of intended position with the hand, arm, leg, or eye.
What is ataxia?
Lack of coordination of muscle movements
Includes gait abnormalities
What is hypotonia?
Weakness on side of legion
