Cerebellar stroke Flashcards
what is cerebellar stroke?
is a condition in which the circulation to the cerebellum is impaired due to a lesion of:
-the superior cerebellar artery
-anterior inferior cerebellar artery
-the posterior inferior cerebellar artery
Accounts for 2-3 % of strokes.
cause : A blood clot, bleeding or trauma to these blood vessels can cause a cerebellar stroke.
Risk factors of cerebellar stroke ?
* The risk factors for a blood clot causing a cerebellar stroke are the same as the risk factors for any ischemic stroke in any part of the brain. These include : smoking, hypertension, elevated fat and cholesterol levels, heart disease and diabetes.
*The risk factors for a cerebellar hemorrhagic stroke include:
Extreme hypertension or a ruptured brain aneurysm.
Neck trauma to the back of the neck- leading to an ischemic or a hemorrhagic stroke.
Symptoms of cerebellar stroke?
The function of the cerebellum include:
- Coordinating movement
- Maintaining balance.
- Vision: coordinating eye movements.
- Motor learning.
- cognitive functions such as attention and language
so the symptoms of cerebellar damage will be:
1. Uncoordinated movements of the limbs or trunk (ataxia), Abnormal reflexes,Tremors
2. Difficulty walking, including problems with balance
3 .Problems with vision (eg, difficulty controlling eye movement),
Problems with eyes (eg, small pupil, droopy eyelid)
4. Vertigo, Difficulty hearing,Nausea and vomiting ,
Intense headache, Loss of consciousness,
Problems sensing pain and temperature
5. Speech problems (eg, slurred speech) and difficulty swallowing
Diagnosis of cerebellar stroke ?
MRI & CT ( MRI > CT)
magnetic resonance angiography (MRA)
CT angiogram (CTA)
ultrasound
