ceramics quiz 1 Flashcards
slip
liquid clay
plasticity
characteristics of clay that refers to its malleability
greater plasticity –> easier to form with
aging & wedging ^ plasticity
in PLASTIC state in classroom bin
leather hard
clay half way dried so it has stiffened somewhat but has flexible characteristic of leather; ideal for most carving; strongest UNFIRED stated; driest state that can be attached to
greenware
pottery not yet fired; completely air dried & ready to be fired
bisque
clay made ceramic through firing; FIRST firing
glazeware
pots that have been glazed & await final firing
kiln
potter’s oven where pottery heated to become ceramic
firing
heating of pots/clay sculpture to harden them into ceramic state
pyrometric cone
cone shape material used to measure temperature in kiln
–> begin to melt & bend at predicted temperature
pyrometer
device inserted into kiln to measure current state of kiln & connected to gauge outside of kiln where temp. can be read
sgraffito
decorative slip method in which coating of slip is drawn or carved through to reveal contrasting color of clay (or another slip) beneath it
slip trailing
decorative slip in which slip is squeezed through a bottle with a small nozzle so that it adheres to the clay piece as a raised ridge
wedging
process of preparing clay for use by compressing it in an effort to remove air pockets & blend into one consistency
score & slip
for attaching pieces of clay together: scratch surface of clay, moisten with liquid clay, press together
helps to ensure piece does not crack or fall apart when it dries
slake
process of clay disintegrating in water to a slip consistency; DRIED clay slakes down, moist does not
