Ceramics Flashcards
1
Q
Ceramic
A
A range of hard, durable, non-metallic materials, which are generally unaffected by heat.
E.g. Glass and China
2
Q
Ceramic’s properties
A
Hard, stiff, strong when compressed, and brittle
Heat resistant, high melting point
Good insulators of heat
Very unreactive
3
Q
Making ceramics
A
When clay is heated, chemical reactions occur and new compounds, like china and porcelain are made.
During cooling, crystals are formed or bond together in the ceramic.
Slower the cooling, bigger the crystals as there is more time to form a grid-like lattice structure.
4
Q
Lattice structure
A
An arrangement of many atoms, which are bonded together Ina fixed shape.
- > atoms join by bonds
- > as there are so many it is stiff
- > the strength of the bonds causes a high melting point.
