What is the term for liquid clay?
Slip.
How is molding done?
Flat slabs of clay are pressed into molds to create various shapes or forms.
What are the stages of dryness?
Wet, leather hard, and bone dry.
What is a term to describe unfired clay objects in general?
Greenware.
What is a kiln?
A furnace designed for heating clay to make the clay hard and stone-like.
What is a loop tool?
A tool with a wooden handle and wire loop at one or both ends, used to hollow or carve clay forms.
What is majolica?
Firing a piece of earthenware, applying a tin enamel when drying, which allows the piece to form a white opaque porous surface. A design is then applied with glaze and then one layer of transparent glaze is applied.
What is mille fiore?
A method to create designs by folding different colored clays together in “rods” or bars, then slicing them like cookies.

What is sgraffito?
A decorating technique that is leather-hard clay coated with englobe or slip of contrasting color. A picture of pattern is then added by carving or scraping off slip to show the underneath clay.

A method to shape clay by inserting the thumb into the clay and lightly pinching with the thumb and fingers while rotating the ball slowly.

What is wax resist?
A decorative technique where patterns/designs are made by using a wax medium to resist the final glaze application when the wax is dry.
What is reduction?
A firing technique where there is insufficient oxygen to consume the free carbon emanating from the heated glaze and clay. This results in the formation of carbon monoxide, which pulls oxygen from the clay body and glaze forming color changes.
What is the technique of building by rolling out coils of clay and joining them together with fingers or a tool?
