Centromeres and Telomeres Flashcards
What is a centromere?
region of chromosome to which spindle fibers attach during cell division
What are centromeres made of?
heterochromatin and repetitive DNA sequences
What is a kinetochore?
multiprotein complex that acts as an anchor for attachments sites for spindle fibers
What does the centromere position define?
ratio between the short (p) and long (q) arms of the chromosome
What are telomeres?
ends of linear chromosomes
What base are telomeres rich in?
guanine
What is the common base repeat found in telomeres?
TTAGGG
What is the purpose of the single strand portion of telomeres?
300 base pair length sequence found at the end of the chromosome that will loop to form a knot to stabilize the end of the chromosome
What is the purpose of telomere cap proteins?
distinguish telomeres from double strands breaks and prevent activation of repair pathways
What are the two functions of telomeres?
prevent chromosome deterioration
prevent fusion with neighboring chromosomes
