Centrifugal Purifier Troubleshooting Flashcards
Purifier will not start/run.
PROBABLE CAUSE:
- No electrical power at controller.
- Power failure at load center.
- Faulty wiring.
- Faulty motor.
REMEDY:
- Restore power at controller.
- Restore power at load center.
- Verify proper electrical connection.
- Repair/Replace motor.
Noisy motor.
PROBABLE CAUSE:
- Faulty bearing(s).
- Faulty motor.
REMEDY:
1. Replacing bearing(s).
•Verify proper electrical wiring connection.
•Repair/Replace motor.
Water leakage. Upon initial start-up, water is discharged through 1 1/2-inch drain line.
PROBABLE CAUSE:
1. Faulty bowl shell O-ring.
REMEDY:
1. Replace bowl shell O-ring.
Bowl overflows through 1 1/2-inch bowl casing drain.
PROBABLE CAUSE:
1.Discharge pressure too high.
REMEDY:
1.Reduce discharge pressure.
Fuel overflows through 4-inch water discharge drain.
PROBABLE CAUSE:
1 .Discharge pressure too high.
2. Fuel induced too fast during start-up.
3. Excessive throughput.
4. Discharge ring size incorrect.
5. Faulty or missing discharge ring O-ring.
REMEDY:
- Reduce discharge pressure by opening back pressure valve.
- Re-prime bowl and restart fuel flow more slowly.
- Reduce flow using bypass.
- Select proper discharge ring size and replace discharge ring.
- Replace discharge ring O-ring.
Excessive amounts of fuel in water discharge.
PROBABLE CAUSE:
- Discharge ring size incorrect.
- Bad seal between paring disc and O-ring on inlet
- outlet housing.
REMEDY:
1. Select proper size discharge ring and replace discharge ring. Check O-ring andreplace as necessary. Ensure mating threads between the paring disc and feed tube assembly are not scarred or galled.
Excessive amounts of water in purified fuel.
PROBABLE CAUSE:
1. Discharge ring size incorrect.
REMEDY:
1. Select proper size discharge ring and replace discharge ring.
Purifier makes excessive noise or vibrates.
PROBABLE CAUSE:
- Brake applied.
- Faulty spindle bearing(s).
- Faulty drive gear(s).
- Unbalancedbowl.
- Baseplate bolts over torqued.
- Insufficient gap between motor and drive coupling.
- Improper electrical connections.
- Paring disc not engaged
REMEDY:
1. Release brake.
2. Replace spindle bearing(s).
3. Replace drive gear(s).
4. Notify TYCOM.
5. Re-torque baseplate bolts.
6. Readjust drive coupling.
7. Re-verify proper electrical connections.
8. Disassemble and inspect paring disc/distributor for
damage; repair or replace as necessary. Reassemble and engage paring disc.
Purifier will not come up to speed in prescribed time
PROBABLE CAUSE:
- Brake applied.
- Agastat timer setting incorrect.
- Faulty wiring between controller and motor.
- Faulty bearing(s).
REMEDY:
- Release brake.
- Verify correct Agastat timer setting.
- Verify proper electrical connection and wire condition.
- Replace bearing(s).
Loss of feed pressure
PROBABLE CAUSE:
- Loss of transfer pump suction.
- Transfer pump shutoff via programmable Navy logic controller (PNLC) **switch.
- Power loss to transfer pump.
- Transfer pump failure.
REMEDY:
- Re-establish pump suction.
- Align a full stowage tank to transfer pump.
- Determine source for power loss. Restore power.
- Switch feed pumps.
Loss of discharge.
PROBABLE CAUSE:
- Loss of feed pressure.
- Loss of water seal.
REMEDY:
- Re-establish feed supply pressure.
- Re-establish water seal and feed supply pressure
Air in clean fuel discharge sight glass
PROBABLE CAUSE:
1. Discharge pressure not in accordance with prescribed operating parameters of 4–10 psi.
REMEDY:
1. Slowly throttle purifier discharge valve until air
bubbles disappear from fuel.
Purifier rpm slows suddenly
PROBABLE CAUSE:
- Loss of water seal.
- Loss of power to motor.
- Faulty bearing(s) in motoror purifier drive assembly.
REMEDY:
- Re-establish water seal and feed supply pressure.
- Determine power problem. Re-establish power supply.
- Replace bearing(s)
Excessive blow back through 4-inch water discharge line and bowl casing drain
PROBABLE CAUSE:
- Drain tank is full.
- Drain tank flapper valve failed.
REMEDY:
- Empty drain tank.
- Verify that flapper valve is installed.
Coupling ring will not seat/align properly during purifier re-assembly
PROBABLE CAUSE:
- Distributor shaft improperly aligned.
- Disks not aligned with distributor shaft key.
- Bowl top key not aligned with bowl shell key way
REMEDY:
- Align distributor shaft properly.
- Realign disks on distributor shaft.
- Align bowl top and bowl shell properly.
