central venous catheters Flashcards
Central venous pressure (CVP) reflects ____ atrial pressure?
right
Right arterial pressure (RAP) reflects right ventricular end diastolic pressure when what valve is open?
tricuspid valve
Can CVP differentiate between right or left heart or lung problems?
NO SIR !! CANT
What are some indications for central venous pressure catheters?
- give fluids, drugs, blood , TPN ( total parenteral nutrition)
- monitor fluid status
- blood sampling
what are CVP sites for insertion?
- Right Internal jugular
- subclavian
- brachial
- medial basilac
- lateral cephalic
what are some complications for CVP catheters?
- infection
- thromboembolism
- thrombophlebitis ( swelling or inflammation)
- vein damage during insertion
- bleeding
- pneumothorax / hemothroax
- air embolism
what is central venous pressure equipment?
- 3 way stopcock
- IV solution
- CVP catheter ( up to 3 ports)
- Transducer of water manometer ( bubble needs to be in middle of ruler stick)
How many CVP ports can you have?
up to 3
where does the “A” in the CVP waveform show up?
in the P-R interval
where does the “C” in the CVP waveform show up?
end of the QRS complex
where does the “V” in the CVP waveform show up?
near the end of the T wave
why would you not have left side artifact in a CVP catheter?
because it goes into the right atrium !!
Low central venous pressure is less than what?
2 mmHg
What can cause low CVP?
- Hypovolemia
- vasodilation by drugs of increase in temp
- spontaneous inspiration
- transducer below right atrium
- air bubbles or leaks
High CVP is greater than what?
6 mmHg
