Central Nervous System Study Questions Flashcards
How has the brain changed during animal evolution?
We moved out of the spinal cord. Regions have changed in terms of proportions and changed due to going on land.
What does the cerebrum do?
Responsible for integration
What unique anatomical features does the cerebrum have?
Highly folded and contains white and grey matter.
Why are these anatomical features beneficial for the cerebrum’s functions?
Highly folded (more surface area), grey matter where integration occurs. More grey matter=more integration
What do the 3 types of functional areas do?
Sensory, Motor, Association are the 3 functional areas.
What is the general flow of information through the cerebrum?
What is sensation?
Sensation is the unconcious feeling of stimuli that carries out more integration but does not alert the brain to act.
What is perception?
Perception is the concious feeling of stimuli that sends signals to the brain to act.
What is the difference between general and special senses?
General senses involve touch, and special senses are hearing, taste, smell, and equilibrum.
General uses skin receptors, and special uses cranial nerves.
