CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM DRUGS Flashcards
Study of drugs that alter processes controlled by the NS
Neuropharmacology
Used for psychiatric disorders, suppresion of seizures, relief of pain, production of anasthesia.
CNS drugs
Effect of long exposure to therapeutic drug
- Increased therapeutic effect
- Decreased side effects
- Tolerance and Physical
dependence
Characteristic of ADHD
- Inattentiveness
- inability to concentrate
- restlessness.
Slowly progressive neurodegenartive disorder characterized by tremor, rigidity, postural instability and slowed movement.
Parkinson’s Disease
Bradykinesia
Slow movement
Group of disorders characterized by excessive excitablility of neurons in the CNS
EPILEPSY
General term that applies to all types of epileptic event.
Seizure
Abnormal motor phenomenon
Convulsion
2 types of seizures
- Partial
- Generalized
Anti epileptic drug mechanism
- Suppresion of sodium
- Suppresion of calcium influx
- Antagomnism of gltamate
- Potentiation of GABA
Most commonly prescribed anticonvulsant drug
PHENYTOIN
Effective against partial seizure and generalized tonic clonic seizures but not absence seizure
PHENOBARBITAL
Relax skeletal muscle by distrupting transmission on impluses at the motor end
NEUROMASCULAR BLOCKING DRUGS
Competitve/stabilizing drugs
NON DEPOLARIZING BLOCKING DRUGS
