Central Nervous System Drugs Flashcards
Study of drugs that alter processes controlled by the nervous system
NEUROPHARMACOLOGY
Conducting an action potential down the axon of the neuron
Axon Conduction
Process by which information is carried across the gap between neuron and postsynaptic neuron
Synaptic Transmission
Decreased response occurring in the course of prolonged drug use
Tolerance
State in which abrupt discontinuation of drug use will precipitate a withdrawal syndrome
Physical Dependence
It is Inattentiveness, inability to concentrate, restlessness, hyperactivity, inability to complete tasks and impulsivity
ADHD (ATTENTION DIFICIT HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER)
It is unable to move and may collapse
NARCOLEPSY
Given to increase child’s attention span and cognitive performance or it is used to treat narcolepsy
Methylprenidate
Treatment of respiratory depression caused by drug overdose and COPD
Doxapram
It is slowly progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by tremor, rigidity, postural instability and slowed movement.
PARKINSON’S DISEASE
Directly/ indirectly can activation of dopamine receptors
Dopaminergic drugs
Drugs that block receptors for ACh
Anticholinergic Agents
Group of disorders characterized by excessive excitability of neurons in the CHS
EPILEPSY
Excitation undergoes limited spread from the focus to adjacent cortical areas
PARTIAL SEIZURES
Excitation spreads widely throughout both hemispheres of the brain
GENERALIZED SEIZURES
Most commonly prescribed anticonvulsant drug
PHENYTOIN
Effective against partial seizures and generalized tonic-clonic seizures but not absence seizures
PHENOBARBITAL
Most effective for spasticity of cerebral origin (i.e. cerebral palsy, MS, spinal cord injury, stroke)
DANTROLENE SODIUM
Pregnancy Risk Category C
Baclofen and dantrolene
Controlled Substance (schedule IV) and this is the pregnancy risk category D.
Diazepam
