Central Nervous System (CNS) Flashcards
What does the brain contain?
Approximately 100 billion neurons, forming circuits which enable transmission of information. Supporting glial cells can also make up the brain.
What are some functions of the brain?
Many, including attention, concentration, memory, language, executive function. Also receives, processes, and sends information to/from the PNS via the spinal cord.
What is the spinal cord?
It is a cable like column of nerves that runs from the base of the neck to the lower back, encased within 26 vertebrae.
What is the functions of the spinal cord?
It transmits sensory information from the PNS to the brain. Transmits nerve signals from the brain to the PNS (motor information). It also provides rapid reflexive responses independently of the brain.
