Central Nervous System Flashcards
nerve cell
carries electrical messages around the body
brain
the organ of soft nervous tissue that is contained in the skull, functioning as the coordinating centre. most of the commands come from here and are transmitted around the body via electrical impulses.
spinal cord
the cylindrical bundle of nerve fibres and associated tissue which is enclosed in the spine and connects nearly all parts of the body to the brain, with which it forms the central nervous system. The reflex arch sends the signal to the spinal cord and not to the brain, making a reaction faster.
vagus nerve
the vagus nerve, the longest of the cranial nerves, controls your inner nerve centre - the parasympathetic system. it oversees a vast range of crucial functions, communicating motor and sensory impulses to every organ in your body.
