central nervous system Flashcards
1
Q
what is the CNS made up of
A
- brain
- spinal cord
it is the central processing and control point for all human behaviour.
2
Q
subcortical structures 1
A
3
Q
what does the thalamus do?
A
- receives info from various senses and passes it onto the appropriate areas of the cortex for higher processing.
4
Q
hypothalamus
A
- sits below the thalamus.
- controls motivational behaviours such as hunger
- has a role in stress response through its control of fight or flight.
- maintains a balance of bodily functions
5
Q
limbic system
A
the hypothalamus, amygdala, the thalamus and the hippocampus.
- involved in our behavioural and emotional responses
6
Q
cerebellum
A
- coordinates posture, balance and movement.
- it does this by receiving and integrating info from spinal cord.
7
Q
corpus callsum
A
- dense collection of nerve cells
- physically connects the 2 hemispheres below the cerebral cortex.
8
Q
the cerebral cortex of both hemispheres is subdivided into 4 lobes
what are the frontal lobes
A
- 40% of cerebral cortex
- control high level cognitive functions such as thinking, planning etc
- also contain the motor cortex
9
Q
parietal
A
- top of head
- process sensory info from skin ( touch, temp, pressure)
10
Q
occipital lobes
A
- back of head
- responsible for visual perception including colour, form and motion.
11
Q
temporal lobes
A
- over ears
- contains auditory cortex
- deals with sound info mainly from opp ear
- has a role in understanding language.
