Sex
physical and biological characteristics relating to reproductive anatomy, such as sex chromosomes or sex organs
Gender
psychological characteristics and social categories that human culture creates
Cisgender
individuals who have a match between the sex they were assigned at birth, their reproductive anatomy or biological sex, and their gender identity
Transgender
individuals whose gender identity, expression, or behavior does not conform to the sex they were assigned at birth
Doing gender
active, dynamic process that occurs when expressing one’s gender during interactions with other people
Sexism
bias against people on the basis of their gender or sex
Racism
bias against people on the basis of their racial or ethnic group
Classism
bias that is based on a person’s socioeconomic status or social class
Ableism
bias or discrimination against people with disabilities
Heterosexism
a belief system that devalues lesbian women, gay men, and bisexual women
Sexual prejudice
a belief system that devalues lesbian women, gay men, and bisexual women
Ageism
bias based on a person’s chronological age
Feminism
the principle that values women’s experiences and ideas
Liberal feminism
emphasizes the goal of gender equality, giving women and men the same legal rights and opportunities
Cultural feminism
emphasizes the positive qualities that are presumed to be stronger in women than in men
