Used by 1950s. Mass production brought affordability so by early 1980s, most of rural population had access. Life in SU presented as joyeous, whereas life under capitalism shown to be rife with crime, homelessness and violence

Limiting info restricted level of public debate, quashing oppositional opinions that could have developed into a serious threat. Controlled views and opinions. A wide audience was able to be reached to ingrain communist values
