Cementum Flashcards
1
Q
What is cementum?
A
Part of the periodontium that cover the root dentine and attaches the teeth to the alveolar bone by providing attachment to periodontal ligament.
Similar to bone - collagen matrix, lamellar arrangement.
Laid down by cementocytes.
2
Q
Where is acellular cementum?
A
Adjacent to dentine.
Primary cementum .
No cells!
3
Q
Where is cellular cementum?
A
In apical part of root and in furcation regions.
Secondary cementum.
Contains cementocytes.
4
Q
What is acellular extrinsic fibre cementum?
A
Collagen fibres from PDL (sharpey’s).
Primary acellular cementum equivalent.
Cervical 2/3 of roots.
5
Q
What is cellular intrinsic fibre cementum?
A
NO sharpey's fibres. No role in tooth attachment. Intrinsic collagen parallel to surface. Secondary cellular cementum equivalent. May represent as a transitional form.
