Cellular Respiration Flashcards
What does ATP stand for?
Adenosine Triphosphate
What does ATD stand for?
Adenosine Diphosphate
What is the chemical symbol for glucose?
C6H12O6
What is the name for a process that requires energy to drive it forward?
Endergonic
What kingdom of organism employs cell respiration?
Eukaryotes
What other organisms carry out cellular respiration?
Fungi, protists & plants
In eukaryotic cells, what organelle does the most work to create ATP?
The mitochondria
What did the mitochondria evolve from?
A once independent bacteria that took residence in a prokaryotic cell, creating eukaryotes.
What is always maintained on the cell membrane?
A concentration gradient
What is a concentration gradient?
The process of particles moving through a solution or gas from an area with higher numbers of particles to an area with lower numbers of particles.
(the areas are usually separated by a membrane)
Where does Oxygen travel in the cell?
It will diffuse on the cells exterior into the cytoplasm, then into the mitochondria.
Where does glucose travel in the cell?
It will be partially broken down for energy in the cytoplasm, then go to the matrix.
What is the matrix?
The central fluid of the mitochondria
What is the singular name for the mitochondria?
Mitochondrion
Where does the cell take energy to carry out the creation of ATP?
Molecules in food
