Cells Vocabulary Flashcards
Phospholipid
Lipid found in the cell membrane
Bilipid layer
Two layers of lipids. Membranes found in cells are usually bilipid layers.
Cell membrane
The membrane that makes the “skin” of the cell. composed of phospholipids and proteins.
Hydrophobic
Water fearing. Repelled by water.
Hydrophillic
Water loving. Attracted to water.
Nucleus
The control center of the cell. It contains the DNA.
Endoplasmic reticulum
The transportation system of the cell. It can be smooth or rough.
Smooth ER
Endoplasmic reticulum that doesn’t have ribosomes attached. It makes lipids.
Rough ER
Endoplasmic reticulum that has ribosomes attached. It makes proteins for outside the cell.
Cytoplasm
The fluid, jelly-like part of the cell.
Mitochondria
The power plant of the cell. It makes ATP.
Golgi Body
The packaging/processing organelle. It packages proteins for outside the cell.
Centriole
The organelle that makes spindle fibers for mitosis.
Microtubule
A tube of protein that supports the cell structure. It’s like the skeleton of the cell.
Vacuole
A storage sac found usually in plant cells.
Lysosome
An organelle that contains digestive enzymes.
Microfilament
A protein string that moves organelles around the cell.
Ribosome
The organelle that makes proteins.
Cholroplast
The site of photosynthesis. Found only in plants.
Cell wall
Found only in plants. Composed of cellulose. It adds rigidity to the cell.
Leucoplast
A clear organelle found in plants that stores starch and other substances.
Chormoplast
The organelle that contains pigments other than green. (Orange, yellow, red, etc.)
Diffusion
The movement of a substance from a high concentration to a low concentration.
Osmosis
The diffusion of water.
