Cells Vocab Flashcards
a semi-permeable phospholipid bilayer that holds the cell together and controls what enters/exits the cell
cell(plasma) membrane
control center of the cell that contains the cell’s DNA
nucleus
region inside the nucleus that makes ribosomes
nucleolus
located in cytosol or attached to Rough ER, assemble amino acids into proteins
ribosome
a watery protein fluid/gel that supports and nourishes cell parts
cytosol(cytoplasm)
powerhouse of the cell, site of cellular respiration. Converts energy in food(glucose) into energy for the cell(ATP)
mitochondria
produces and transports carbohydrates, detoxifies poisons
Smooth E.R.
has ribosomes attached to it to produce and transport proteins
Rough E.R.
adds finishing touches, sorts, prepares, and packages cell products into vesicles for transport through and out of the cell
Golgi apparatus
Contains enzymes to digest and recycle wastes, infectious agents, and worn out cell parts
Lysosome
constantly changing support framework that anchors organelles and moves cell parts. Made of microtubules and microfilaments
Cytoskeleton
Stores water. Very large in plant cells
Vacuoles
Sets up spindle apparatus during mitosis to move DNA to opposite sides of the cell to aid in cell division. Only in animal cells.
Centrioles
Hairlike cytoplasmic extensions that sweep back and forth
Cilia
“Tail” that propels sperm cells forward
Flagella
