Cells VOcab Flashcards
Cell
The basic structural and functional unit of life
Cell Theory
- All living things consist of cells
-All cells come from pre-existing cells
-Cells are the basic structural unit of life
Magnification
The degree to which the appearance of a specimen is enlarged
Field of View
the visible area of the specimen that can be seen through the compound microscope
Organelle
A small structure is found within a cell that performs a specific function.
Cytoplasm
the watery substance in which the organelles are suspended; also used for transport and chemical reactions
Cell Membrane
the part of the cell that surrounds and holds the cell contents together; controls movements of substances in and out of the cell
Nucleus
The brain of the cell; store all genetic information that directs the cells functions
Chromosomes
Rod-like structures on the nucleus of the cell that contain genetic information
Vacuole
A membrane-surrounded storage unit that stores food, water and other materials.
Cell Wall
a structure surrounding plant cells that protects and supports the cell, made of cellulose (only in plant cells)
Chloroplast
the part of plant cells that is responsible for photosynthesis
Flagella
A tail-like structure that propels cells through their environment
Cillia
A hair-like projection that helps propel the cell or move substances surrounding the cell
Electron Microscope
A microscope that uses beams of electrons instead of light, it has more magnifying power than a compound microscope.
