Cells (Unit 3) Flashcards
Cell
The basic building blocks of living things
Organelle
The parts of a cell. Each one has a specific function
Cell membrane
A thin, flexible barrier around the outside of all cells. This organelle controls what enters and leaves the cell (selective permeability).
Cell Wall
A thick protective layer around the outside of plant cells. This organelle gives plant cells a stiff and rigid shape.
Cytoplasm
The liquid that fills the inside of cells.
Nucleus
The control center of cells. Contains the DNA of the cell (in eukaryotic cells)
Chloroplast
The organelle that absorbs sunlight and turns it into sugar (photosynthesis)
Mitochondria
The organelle that converts sugar into ATP energy.
Ribosome
This organelle creates proteins for the cell.
Vacuole
The organelle that stores extra water, vitamins, and other materials.
Lysosome
The organelle that removes waste from the cell.
Prokaryotic
Cells that do not have a nucleus.
Eukaryotic
Cells with a nucleus.
Unicellular
Organisms made up of only one cell.
Multicellular
Organisms made up of more than one cell.
