Cells Under and their diseases Flashcards
Howell-Jolley Bodies
Coeliac disease
Schistocytes
(fragmented or broken RBC’s)
Seen in Haemolysis
Teardrop cells
Teardrop shaped RBC’s are seen in Myelofibrosis
Reed Sternberg cells
Giant multi-nucleated cells derived from B lymphocytes.
Seen in Hodgkin’s Lymphoma
Heinz bodies
large Inclusion bodies within their RBC’s Composed of denatured Haemoglobin.
Seen in G6PD deficiency.
Auer Rods
Auer rods are needle-shaped structures which are present in the cytoplasm and contain peroxidase.
Acute Myeloid Lukaemia
Rouleaux formation
clumped red blood cells. It is usually the result of abnormally high levels of proteins such as immunoglobulins in multiple myeloma.
Philedelphia Chromosome
The Philadelphia chromosome (BCR-ABL fusion gene) is found in most patients with chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) and occasionally in patients with AML
Target Cells
This altered membrane morphology is typically caused by changes in the ratio of surface area to volume of the red blood cell (RBC), leading to the formation of the central darker area surrounded by a lighter ring.
- Liver disease, especially obstructive jaundice
- Iron deficiency anaemia
- Thalassaemia
Ringed Sideroblasts
These are erythroblasts containing iron-laden mitochondria.
In the bone marrow
Sideroblastic Anaemia
What are Akanthocytes?
These cells have irregularly spaced, thorn-like projections on their surface, giving them a spiky or “spur cell” appearance when viewed under a microscope
- can occur in alcohol induced Non-megaloblastic Macrocytic anaemia.
starry sky
Burkitt lymphoma is a high-grade aggressive Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
STARRY SKY IS PATHONEUMONIC
H.Pylori
