cells to systems Flashcards
what is a cell?
the smallest independently functioning unit of a living organism
how many cells must something be made of to be an organism?
one
What are tissues made up of?
groups of similar types of cells
What are tissues?
group of cells that work together in a coordinated manner to perform a common function
What is special about the kinds of cells in tissues?
They have finished specialising
What are the kinds of tissues in MAMMALS?
epithelial, muscle, connecting, nerve tissue
What is epithelial tissue?
Sheets of cells that cover external and internal surfaces
What is an example of epithelial tissue?
epidermis of skin, lining of digestive system
What does muscle tissue do?
Contract and relaxes to enable muscle movement
What are the three kinds of muscle tissue?
Smooth muscle, skeletal muscle, cardiac muscle
Where is smooth muscle found and can you control it?
In the inner linings of organs, can’t control.
Where is skeletal muscle found, what does it do, and can you control it?
Attached to bone, moves the body, can control
Where is cardiac muscle found and can you control it?
Found only in the heart, can’t control
What is connective tissue?
joins organs and tissues together, and provides structural support.
What is an example of connective tissue?
bone, cartilage, blood, fat
