Cells,tissues,organs,organ systems Etc. Flashcards
What is a cell ?
A cell is a microscopic structure that makes up an organism.
What does a microscope do ?
A microscope magnifies or enlarges something human eyes cannot see.
What is a cell wall and what is its function ?
A cell wall is made of cellulose which keeps it strong and stiff. It’s function is to keep the cell in shape.
Define a cell membrane and its function.
The cell membrane is thin and flexible and on the inside . It’s function is to control what goes in and out of the cell.
Define cytoplasm and its function?
Cytoplasm is a jelly like substance where chemical reactions happen to keep the cell alive.
What is Sap vacuoule?
Sap vacuoule is a large space fill with cell sap which is a solution of sugars and water.
Define chloroplast and it function?
Chloroplasts look green because they contain chlorophyll. Their function is to use sunlight to make food (photosynthesis)
What is the function of the nucleus?
The function of the nucleus is to control the cell activity
What does mitochondria do?
The mitochondria releases energy from nutrients/food
Is every cell the same with the same function?
No
What 2 things that help to justify a plant cell from an animal cell?
- Only plant cells have a rigid cell wall
- Animal cells don’t have chloroplasts
What is special about the red blood cell?
The red blood cell is special because, unlike other cells, it doesn’t contain a nucleus to create space for hemoglobin.
Define a neurone?
Nerves that carry electrical signals from the brain to the muscles and bring feedback to the brain.
What are the 2 things that make neurones a specialized cell?
Axon and dendrite.
What is the axon and it’s function.
An axon is a long strand of cytoplasm, attached to the neurone, which helps electrical signals travel very far
