Q

What is mitochondria?

A

Most of the reactions for respiration takes place here. Respiration releases energy that the cell needs to work.

Q

What is a cytoplasm?

A

The gel like substance where most of the chemical reactions happen. It contains enzymes that control these chemical reactions.

7
Q

Cell wall

A

Made of cellulose. It supports the cell and strengthens it

Q

Chloroplasts

A

This is where photosynthesis occurs, which makes food for the plant. They contain a green substance called chlorophyll.

14
Q

Why is it good that a palisade leaf cell is tall?

A

Their tall shape means that a lot of surface area is exposed down the side for absorbing CO2 from the air

15
Q

Why is it good that a palisade leaf cell is thin?

A

They’re thin, so many chloroplasts can be packed in at the top of the leaf

16
Q

What have guard cells been adapted to do?

A

Open and close pores

17
Q

What is a stomata?

A

Guard cells have a special kidney shape that opens and closes pores in a leaf.

18
Q

What happens when the plant cell has too much water?

A

The guard cell fills with the water and goes plump(turgid). This makes the stomata open so gases can be exchanged for photosynthesis.

19
Q

What happens when the plant cell has not enough water?

A

The guard cells lose water and go floppy(flaccid), making the stomata close. This helps stop too much water vapor escaping.

20
Q

What are guard cells sensitive to?

A

Light
