Cells & their organization Flashcards
What is a cell sap?
A solution of sugars and other substances inside the vacuole.
What is a cell surface membrane?
A very thin layer of fat and protein that surrounds every living cell.
What is cellulose?
A polysaccharide which forms fibres and is found in the cell walls of plant cells.
What is chlorophyll?
A green, light-absorbing pigment found inside chloroplsts in plant cells.
helps with photosynthesis
What is epithelium?
give example
A layer of cells covering a surface in an animal.
e.g. the cells lining the trachea
What is the order of organization?
organelle -> cell -> tissue -> organ -> organ system -> organism
What is an organelle?
A structure within a cell that is specialised to carry out a particular function or job.
What is a cell?
The basic structural and functional unit of a living organism.
What is a tissue?
A group of cells woth similar structures, working together to perform a shared function.
What is an organ?
A structure made up of a group of tissues, working together to perform specific functions.
What is an organ system?
Group of organs with related functions, working together to perform body functions.
What is photosynthesis?
The fundamental process by which plants manufacture carbohydrates from raw materials using energy from light.
Name the 5 organelles in an animal cell.
Cell membrane, cytoplasm, mitochondria, nucleus, ribosomes
Name the 8 organelles in a plant cell.
Cell wall, cell membrane, cytoplasm, vacuole, mitochondria, chloroplast, nucleus, ribosomes
