Cells Test Flashcards
Phagocyte
A cell that consumes harmful invading organisms in your body
Organs
Several tissue types that work together to perform one or more functions
Inflammation
Redness or soreness
Glucose
breaks down sugars for energy
Endocrine System
A specialized group of cells that make and send hormones
Diffusion
Process that spreads substances through a gas or liquid from higher to lower concentration
Contagious
A disease that can spread from one object to another
Circulatory System
Organ system that carries oxygen to the body and removes carbon dioxide and other wastes
Cell division
Stages: Fertilized egg 2 cell division 4 cell division 8 cell division
Nucleus
The control center for a cell. Carries information for reproduction and directs all cell activities
Cytoplasm
A gel-like material that surrounds all parts of the cell within the membrane. It contains the nucleus and cell’s organelles
Organelles
A structure that has a specific task within the cell
Nervous System
A system that connects your brain to the rest of your organs and controls all your nerves
Organ System
A group of organs that work together to complete a task
Musculoskeletal System
Organ system that supports all parts of your body and allows you to move different parts of your body
Organ System: • Circulatory • Urinary • Musculoskeletal • Digestive • Nervous
Function: • Provides body with oxygen • Removes liquid wastes • Supports body and enables movement • Obtains nutrients from foods • Controls movements and other organ systems
Infectious disease
Caused by harmful organisms or viruses
Chloroplast
An organelle that makes food from sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide
Osmosis
A type of diffusion that allows water to pass but not the solutes in the water
Tissue
Group of cells with a common structure and function
Villi
Special tissues in the intestines that absorb nutrients from the food
Xylem tissue
Special tissue in the grass that transports water and nutrients from the soil
Hormones
The chemical message that travels through the blood and carries special information for certain cellls
Noninfectious disease
Occur when a body system does not function properly and cannot spread from person to person
