Cells & Strucures of Nervous System pt.2 Flashcards
What is the Somatic Nervous System?
nerves that interconnect the brain and the major
muscles and sensory systems of the body
What is the autonomic nervous system?
nerves that connect to the viscera (internal organs)
What does the peripheral nervous system consist of?
Motor nerves that transmit info from spinal cord to muscles and glands; sensory nerves convey info
What are the 2 boundaries between lobes?
Sylvian fissure
Central sulcus
What is the Corpus Callosum?
A bundle of acons that connects 2 cerebral hemispheres
What is the postcentral gyrus?
a strip of cortex behind central cortex, important for touch
What is the precentral gyrus?
in frontal lobe, important for motor control
describe grey matter
contains mostly cell bodies and dendrites
describe white matter
contains mostly axons w/ white myelin sheaths
what are the 2 nerves of the somatic system?
Cranial nerves
Spinal nerves
What is the Limbic system and what does it contain?
Structures for emotion and learning
1. Amygdala
2. Hippocampus
3. Cingulate Gyrus
4. Olfactory bulb
What does the Diencephalon contain?
Thalamus - cluster of nuclei that relay sensory info
Hypothalamus - controls pituitary
What does the midbrain do/contain?
involved w/ sleep & pain perception
Sabstantia Nigra - conveys dopamine for motor control
Describe the sympathetic nervous system
has axons that innervate the sympathetic ganglia
(prepares body for action)
Describe the parasympathetic nervous system
helps body relax and recoup
these ganglia tend to be closer to organs
What are ganglia?
clusters of cells
Describe the anatomy of the brain
has 2 cerebral hemispheres
1. Gyri
2. Sulci
Describe the 4 lobes per cerebral hemisphere
frontal
parietal
occipital
temporal
What are the 3 body parts controlled by brainstem?
Cerebellum (control & motor)
Pons (sensory & motor)
Medulla (marks transition from brain to spinal cord)
What is the ventricular system?
chambers filled with cerebral-spinal fluid that circulate through brain
