Cells Of The Nervous System Flashcards
Neuron cell body
(Perikaryon/Soma) contains the nucleus
Dendrites
The receiving portion of neurons
Axon
Propagates nerve impulses toward another neuron
Schwann cells
Encircle PNS axons
Neurofibrils
Composed of bundles of intermediate filaments that provide the cell shape and support
Neurolemma
The outer uncleared cytoplasm layer of the Schwann cell, enclosed the myelin sheath
Nodes of Ranvier
Gaps in the myelin sheath
Axon hillock
Where the axon joins the cell body
Axoplasm
The cytoplasm of a nerve axon
Axolemma
The cell membrane surrounding an axon. Maintains the membrane potential of the neuron.
Axon Collateral
A branch off of the main axon that feeds back into the soma
Neuron
Possesses electrical excitability, the ability to respond to a stimulus (nerve cell)
