Cells of the CNS Flashcards
1
Q
Describe the astrocytes.
A
- Most abundant of the glial cells
- Communicate with each other (gap junctions and chemical signals) and with neurons
- Structural support - scaffolding during devlopment
- Maintenance of neurotransmitters
- Modulate synpase function
2
Q
Describe the microglia.
A
- Immune cells of the CNS
- Act as macrophages - release cytokines
- Resting or activated
- Resting - homeostatic role
- Activated - motile and pro-inflammatory
- Role in neurodegenerative disease
3
Q
Describe the oligodendrocytes.
A
- Form the myelin sheath around neuronal axons
4
Q
Describe the ependymal cells.
A
- Epithelial cells - line the ventricles
- Secrete CSF
- Form blood brain barrier
