Cells of the CNS Flashcards

1
Q

Describe the astrocytes.

A
  • Most abundant of the glial cells
  • Communicate with each other (gap junctions and chemical signals) and with neurons
  • Structural support - scaffolding during devlopment
  • Maintenance of neurotransmitters
  • Modulate synpase function

Q

Describe the microglia.

A
  • Immune cells of the CNS
  • Act as macrophages - release cytokines
  • Resting or activated
  • Resting - homeostatic role
  • Activated - motile and pro-inflammatory
  • Role in neurodegenerative disease
