Cells of Nervous System Flashcards
1
Q
What are oligodendrocytes?
A
They Myelinate neurones postnatally and establish nodes of ranvier
2
Q
What are astrocytes?
A
They are found throughout the CNS and have many functions.
- Form the blood brain barrier and secrete vasodilators/constrictors to control flow to CNS
- Absorb extracellular potassium and redistribute
- Controls extracellular glutamate
- Controls calcium, chloride and water concentrations
- Metabolic support
- Controls breathing (sensitive to pH)
3
Q
What are microglial cells?
A
Protect the CNS and are immune cells (like macrophages)
4
Q
What are ependymal cells?
A
Ciliated cuboidal epithelium that line ventricles of the brain. Produce CSF and form choroid plexus
