Cells of nervous system. Flashcards
Learn cells
What are the basic units of nervous tissue?
Neurocyte and neuroglia
What are Glia cells?
support cells of nervous system. Cells that surround the soma and the long processes of neurons.
What are Oligodendrocytes and function?
Their main functions are to provide support and insulation to axons in the CNS. Have condensed, round nuclei and unstained cytoplasm
What function does Astrocytes have and in which tissue?
Most numerous and functionally diverse neuroglial cells in CNS. Support and modulate neuron activity, move metabolites and waste to and from neurons. Maintain the tight junctions of the capillaries that form the blood-brain barrier.
What is the function of Microglia?
small cells with short irregular processes evenly distributed across the CNS. Migrate through the neuropil scanning for damage cells and invading microorganisms (immune defense; macrophages of CNS).
What are Ependymal cells and where can you find them?
Simple columnar or cuboidal epithelium-like layer (cilia and microvilli in some places) that lines brain ventricles and spinal canal. Part of choroid plexus that is involved in producing spinal fluid, and one part of blood-brain barrier.
What is a schwann cell and what function does it have?
The principal glia of the PNS. Glial cells function to support neurons. There are two types of Schwann cell, myelinating and nonmyelinating.
Where do you find neurolemmocytes?
aka schwann cells, in the PNS.
Which cells form layer around neuronal cell bodies in PNS and control the microenvironment around the soma.
Satellite cells
What cell is this and where can we find it?

Oligodendrocyte, in CNS.
What cell is this and what is it’s function?

Satelite cell: form layer around neuronal cell bodies in PNS (ganglia) and control the microenvironment around the soma.
what cell is this, and where can we find it?

Astrocytes Most numerous and functionally diverse neuroglial cells in CNS
what cell is this, and in which system can we find it?

Schwann cell, PNS.
What kind of tissue is this?

Ependymal cells
Simple columnar or cuboidal epithelium-like layer (cilia and microvilli in some places) that lines brain ventricles and spinal canal. Part of choroid plexus that is involved in producing spinal fluid, and one part of blood-brain barrier.
what is the name of the small cells and where can we find them?

Multipolar neurons. Can be found in the granule cell layer of cerebellum.
What is this?

Neurons in CNS.
What kind of small structure do we see in this tissue?

capillary
what are the largest cells called?
What structure do we see on the photo?

Purkinje cells
Cerebellum
What is this structure called and which cells are covering the suface?

hematoencephalic barrier/blood - brain barrier
Astrocytes
What kind of cell is this and in which tissue do we find it?

myelinated schwann cell, longitudina section of nerve in PNS
What kind of cells are present in this photo?
Neuron in PNS surrounded by satelite cells.
