cells of nervous system Flashcards
3 types of neurons
multipolar, bipolar, pseudo-unipolar
multipolar neuron
many dendrites one axon, most motor neurons and most cns neurons
bipolar neuron
1 dendrite 1 axon, found in special sense organs such as eyes and nose
pseudo-unipolar neuron
appears to have single axon, most sensory neurons
4 types of glial cells of the CNS
Astrocytes, ependymal cells, microglia, oligodendrocytes
astrocytes
highly branched; provides strucutal support, regulate neuronal signaling, contribute to blood brain barrier, help w/ neural tissue repair
ependymal cells
epithelial like; line ventricles of brain and central canal of spinal cord, circulate CSF, some form choroid plexuses which produce CSF
microglia
small mobile cells; protect cns from infection, become phagocytic in response to inflammation
oligodendrocytes
cells with processes that can surround several axons; cell processes form myelin sheaths around axons or enclose unmyelinated axons in the cns
2 glial cells of pns
schwann cells, satellite cells
schwann cells
single cells surrounding axons; form myelin sheaths around axons or enclose unmyelinated axons in the pns
satellite cells
single cells surrounding cell bodies; support neurons, providing nutrients, protect neurons from heavy-mettal poisons
