Cells & Microscope Flashcards
Living thing/organism
7 characteristics of living things Movement, Respiration, Sensitivity, Growth, Reproduction, Excretion, Nutrition or MRS GREN
Cell
Our body is made out of them, they help us live and are living organisms. It is the building block of life and all living things are made up of one/hundreds of cells.
Cell membrane
Controls what goes in and out of the cell and is a layer around a cell that acts like a barrier.
Nucleus
Contains cells genetic material (DNA) that control the cells activities.
Cytoplasm
Jelly like substance inside the cell where chemical reactions take place.
Mitochondria
This is where respiration happens when the energy is released from food.
Cell wall
Only in plant cells and gives the cell a structure and support.
Permanent Vacuole
Stores food (cell sap) and is a large area in only plant cells.
Chloroplast
Found in plant cells and some unicellular organisms e.g euglena and is where light is trapped for photosynthesis to occur.
Eyepiece lens
On the microscope, you look through it to see the specimen with your eye (times 10 magnification).
Objective lens
Where you can edit the zoom of the microscope: low power, medium power and high power. x4 x10 x20
Coarse focus wheel
What you turn on the microscope to get a rough image of the specimen and is on the side of it.
Fine focus wheel
What you turn after the coarse focus wheel to get a clear image in the microscope and it is on top of the coarse focus wheel.
Stage
Where the slide is placed to look through the microscope and has clips to keep it in place.
Total magnification
When you times the numbers on the objective lens’ by the eye piece lens magnification (10). This is the full magnification you are looking through.
