Cells & Life Processes Flashcards
What are the 7 characteristics of life?
MRS GREN
- Movement
- Respiration
- Sensitivity
- Growth
- Reproduction
- Excretion
- Nutrition
What is movement?
All living things move - to find food, escape predators or find better growing conditions.
Plants move things like their leaves or flowers so that they can face the sun.
What is respiration?
Getting energy from food to carry out cell processes and also the release of energy.
What is sensitivity?
Things need information from the environment. e.g. Detecting changes in the surroundings such as changes in light levels.
What is growth?
Growth is the increase in size of an organism.
What is reproduction?
Making new generations of a species.
What is excretion?
Getting rid of waste - including carbon dioxide from respiration.
What is nutrition?
Taking in and using food as a supply of energy.
What are the things an a plant cell?(6)
- Nucleus
- Cell membrane
- Cytoplasm
- Chloroplast
- Large permanent vacuole
- Cell wall
What are the things in an animal cell?(3)
- Nucleus
- Cell membrane
- Cytoplasm
What does a cell wall do?
Provides a plant cell with a rigid structure.
What does a cell membrane do?
Controls what enters and leaves the cell.
What does a nucleus do?
Contains genetic information that controls the cells’ activities.
What does a cytoplasm do?
Contains chemicals and structures that allow chemical reactions to occur.
What does a chloroplast do?
Allows a plant cell to photosynthesise (use light energy to make food).
