Cells Lab Flashcards
food production in plants
plants produce their own food thanks to chloroplasts which do photosynthesis
food storage in plants
when a plant produces more food than it needs, it converts excess glucose (sugar) into starch for storage purposes (stored in roots and leaves)
Structural differences between plant and animal cells
- plant cells are made of chloroplasts (do photosynthesis) and cellulose (make up the cell wall)
- animal cells are made of centrioles (structural support) and only has cellular membrane
how to tell between plant and animal cells
animal cells have round structure and freestanding
plant cells are compact and have a cell wall
The purpose of staining cells
- darkens the cell structure, allowing you to see them better (kills the cells)
What was responsible for the coloration in the various plant cells we observed
chlorophyll, central vacuole, plastids
Explain the mechanism by which plants exchange gasses
exchanges of gasses occur thanks to the stomata of plants that are made up of 2 guard cells containing chloroplasts (produce food therefore control opening and closing)
