Cells involved in the Nervous system Flashcards
Glial cells
play essential roles in supporting and maintaining the proper function of the brain and spinal cord.
Astrocytes
Provide physical and metabolic support to neurons, maintain chemical balance in the brain, and are part of the blood-brain barrier
Oligodendrocytes
Responsible for forming myelin in the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord).
What is Myelin
Myelin is a layer that wraps around neurons, allowing for the fast transmission of nerve impulses.
Schwann cells
produce myelin but in the peripheral nervous system
Microglia
Act as the immune defenders of the nervous system, protecting the brain from infections and clearing away cellular debris and damaged tissue
Ependymal cells
Line the ventricles of the brain and the central canal of the spinal cord, helping to circulate cerebrospinal fluid
