Q

Light microscopes

A

Relatively long wave length of light rays. This means they can only distinguish between two objects if they are 0.2 micrometers apart.
This can be overcome by using beams of electrons. These have shorter wavelengths.

Q

Magnification

A

It is how many times bigger the image is when compared to the object.

Q

Resolution

A

The minimum distance apart that two objects can be in order for them to appear as separate items. The resolving power depends on the wavelength.
Every microscope has a limit of resolution.

Q

Tissues

A

A collection of similar cells that perform a specific function.
Epithelial- found in animals and are sheets of cells. They line the surface of organs and have a protective or secretory function.
Xylem- occurs in plants and made up of a number of similar cell types. Used to transport water and mineral ions throughout the plant. Give mechanical support.

Q

Mitosis

A

Produces two daughter cells that have the exact same number of chromosomes as the parent cell and each other. It has an exact copy of DNA of the parent cell. A mutation could change the genetic make-up of the nuclei. Mitosis is always proceeded by a period during which the cell is not dividing. This is called interphase. There are 5 stages to mitosis. Interphase, prophase, metaphase, anaphase and telophase.
