cells as the basis of life Flashcards
what are living things
anything that can move, respire, sense, grow reproduce, maintain equilibrium, excrete waste and take up nutrirents (MRS GREEN)
what is an organism
a living thing made up of 1 or more cells
what does the cell theory state
- All living things are made up of cells
- Cells are the smallest and most basic units of life.
- All cells come from pre-existing cells
what are prokaryotes
- single celled organisms
- no nucleus
- circular loop of DNA
eg. Bacteria and Archaea
what are eukaryotes?
-single and multi-celled organisms
-Nucleus
-Linear strands of DNA
eg. Animals, plants, fungi and protists
Plasma (cell) Membrane
the phospolipid bilayer and embedded proteins separate inside and outside enviroment
Cytosol
The fluid that surrounds the organelles inside a cell
Ribosomes
small RNA-protein structures that are the site of protein synthesis
DNA
a double-stranded nucleic acid chain made up of nucleotides.
Carries the instructions for proteins which are required for cell and organism survival
Membrane- bound organalle
Structure within cell that is enclosed by phospholipid bilayer
Chromosome
Structure made of protein and nucleic acids that carries genetic information
7 classifications of life
- Kingdom
- Phylum
- Class
- Order
- Family
- Genus
- Species
6 Kingdoms of Life
- Animalia
- Plantae
- Fungi
- Protista
- Bacteria
- Archea
What 3 domains do all organisms fall into?
- Archaea
- Bacteria
- Eukarya
Golgi Body
site of protein sorting, packaging and modification
Lysosome
Contains digestive enzymes responsible for breaking down cell waste and toxins
Mitochondrion
Site of aerobic cellular respiration
Have own DNA and ribosomes
Chloroplast
Site of photosynthesis
Vacuoles
Sac used for water and solute storage
Cell Wall
Provides strength and structure to plant, bacterial and fungal cells
Rough ER
coated with ribosomes. Synthesizes and modifies proteins (close to nucleus)
Smooth ER
Not coated with ribosomes. The production of lipids in a cell
Nucleus
Protect and confine the DNA of cell
Nucleolus
Site of ribosome production.
