Cells And Systems Topic 1-3 Flashcards
What are CELLS
Smallest unit that can preform the functions of life
What is a CELL MEMBRANE
Selectively permeable membrane/ structure enclosing the contents of a cell/ organelle; regulates passage of substances in and out, made of cellulose
What is a CELL WALL
Rigid structure surrounding the cell membrane of plants and some unicellular organisms; protects the cell
What is CHLOROPLAST
An organelle that contain chlorophyll-green pigment- allowing plants to make carbohydrates through photosynthesis (chemical energy from the sun); only in plants and some unicellular organisms
What is CYTOPLASM
Gel-like substance within a cell membrane that contains and supports the structure of the cell
What is MAGNIFY
To make an object appear larger by using a microscope or another magnifying instrument
What is a MICROSCOPE
Instrument making objects appear larger by bending light through a lens
What is MULTICELLULAR
Having many cells
What is the NUCLEUS
In a cell, an organelle that controls all the cells activities, like the brain
What is an ORGANELLE
Structure within a cell that has a specific function
What is UNICELLULAR
Having a single cell
What is a VACUOLE
In a cell, fluid filled organelle storing water, food, and waste
What is a WET-MOUNT
Type of sample preparation using a microscope slide, cover slip, and water
What is CELLULOSE
Tough carbohydrate material that in a large part, makes up the cell wall of many plants and fungi
What is the MITOCHONDRIA
Powerhouse of the cell, burns energy that is created to keep the cell running
What is DNA
Chemical code created by the nucleus that holds all the “instructions” on how the cell should run and how to “build” a new organism
What is a RIBOSOME
Reads coded message from DNA, then creates material needed by the cell based on the code it reads
What is a ROUGH ER
Rough because covered in ribosomes, stuff is synthesized by the cell and shipped off towards the SMOOTH ER
What is a SMOOTH ER
Breaking down the cell/ ribosome further and/or delivering material to the GOLGI
What is a GOLGI
Shares information, transporting it to other cells (way of communication), retrieving new info, and the cycle repeats
What is a CYTOSKELETON
Network of fine fibres intertwined together
