Cells and organisation Flashcards
How can cells be viewed?
With a light microscope
How do light microscopes work?
The light shines through the object and into the objective lens, this passes through the eyepiece and into your eye. A series of lens magnify the cell
What are the MRS GREN life processes?
Movement, respiration, sensitivity, growth, reproduction, excretion, nutrition
Name the function of the cell membrane
Controls the movement of substances in and out of the cell
Name the function of the cytoplasm
Where the chemical reactions occur
Name the function of the nucleus
Carries genetic information and controls what happens within the cell
Name the function of the mitochondria
Where most of the respiration reactions occur
Name the function of the vacuole
Contains cell cap which keeps the cell firm
Name the function of the cell wall
Made of cellulose to keep the cell firm/ structured
What do both animal and plant cells contain?
Cell membrane, cytoplasm, nucleus and mitochondria
How do plant cells differ?
They contain a cell wall, vacuole and chloroplasts
Define multicellular
We are made up of multiple cells
Why do cells specialise?
To carry out a specific function
Name the function and special features of a red blood cell
Function: Carry oxygen
Special features: Large surface area for oxygen to pass through , contains haemoglobin to join oxygen and it contains no nucleus
Name the function and special features of nerve cells
Function: Carry nerve impulses
Special features: Long, connections at each end and can carry electric signals
