Cells and Organelles Flashcards
Human Anatomy & Physiology
Nucleus
The cell’s control centre. Contains chromosomes that carry genetic information necessary for protein synthesis
Nucleolus
The part of the nucleus responsible for ribosome formation
Ribosome
The site of protein synthesis
Plasma Membrane
A barrier surrounding the cell. Substances can pass through this by passive diffusion or active transport
Cytosol
The medium inside the cell in which other organelles are suspended
Cytoplasm
The cytosol and organelles, except the nucleus
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum
Involved in the synthesis and storage of lipids and steroids
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum
Involved in isolating and transporting proteins. Associated with ribosomes
Golgi body
The place carbohydrates and proteins are combined
Mitochondria
The site of cellular respiration
Lysosome
A vacuole containing cytolytic enzymes, which can break down cells
Secretory Vesicle
A vacuole containing secretory substances
Micropinocytic Vesicle
A vacuole containing substances ingested by the cell
Glycogen Granules
A site of carbohydrate storage
