Cells and Multicellular organisms Flashcards
What is Passive Transport?
A way for molecules to pass through the membrane.
No energy is needed
What is active transport?
The movement in and out of a cell, usually against a concentration or ion gradient requires ATP.
What is Diffusion?
is the movement of molecules from a high to low concertation. Passive transport
What is the 2 types of diffusion?
Simple and facilitated diffusion
What is simple diffusion?
transport through the phospholipid bilayer. No protein needed.
No energy needed. Passive transport
What is Facilitated diffusion?
The diffusion of ionic substances through protein channels. Passive transport
Denatured meaning.
easily inactivated by heat
What are the main things that affect the rate of diffusion?
Temperature: more heat=faster moving molecules
particle size: small molecules require less energy to move.
Concentration: The greater the difference between 2 locations the faster the diffusion occurs
What does 2 d.p. mean?
2 decimal places
How do you calculate image size?
Image size=Actual size x magnification
How do you calculate actual size?
Actual size= Image size/magnification
How do you calculate magnification?
Magnification = Image size/Actual size
Cell size
smaller= less distance to travel
Higher SA:V ratio
how to calculate SA?
SA = L x W x 6
How to calculate V?
V= L x W x H
