Cells and movement across membranes Flashcards
What are the main parts of an animal cell?
The main parts of an animal cell are the nucleus, cell membrane, cytoplasm and mitochondria.
What features do plant cells have that animal cells don’t?
chloroplasts
cell wall made of cellulose
large central vacuole
What does the cell membrane do?
Controls the movement of substances into and out of the cell
What does the cytoplasm do?
Jelly-like substance, where chemical reactions happen
What does a nucleus do?
Carries genetic information and controls what happens inside the cell
What does the mitochondria do?
Where respiration takes place, releasing energy for the cell
What does the cell wall do?
Made of a tough substance called cellulose, which supports the cell
What do chloroplasts do?
Contain the green pigment chlorophyll, which absorbs light energy. This is where photosynthesis occurs.
what does a light microscope do?
It uses focused light passed through the object and two lenses to magnify an image of the object.
what are the parts of a light microscope?
Eyepiece lense, coarse focus, fine focus, objective lenses, stage.
what is the purpose of a stage?
It has a hole in the centre which light can be focused up through the object.
What is the equation for magnification?
magnification= image/actual size
what is differentiation?
how an embryo is formed by the process of zygotes dividing by mystosis
what is it called when cells with a similar finction are grouped together?
Tissues
what is a collection of different tissues carrying out a similar function called?
an organ
