Cells and Life Flashcards
What is the difference between an animal and plant cell?
Animals cells do not have a cell wall, starchgrain, a vacuole or choroplast because they do not need to store food.
The function of the cell wall
Provides support, and is strenghened with cellulose.
Function of cell membrane
Controls what goes in and out of the cell
Function of cytoplasm
Where important reactions happen.
Function of Nucleus
Controls the cell and stores DNA
Function of Mitochondria
Where respiration takes place
Function of starchgrain
Food store in plants
Function of choroplast
Where photosynthesis takes place
Function of vacuole
Provide support in combination with the cell wall
What are the 3 parts to the cell theory?
- All organisms are composed of cells
- All living structures are composed of cells
- All cells come from pre-existing cells
Sperm
The cell produced by all biological males. Sperm is released from the penis during sex.
Egg (Ovum)
Cell produced by all biological females. One egg is released from the ovary each month.
Placenta
Stores nutrients and oxygen for the baby
