Cells and Body Systems Flashcards
Microscope
Instrument used to see objects which are too small to be seen with the eye
Focus
Used to sharpen the image seen in a microscope
Eyepiece
Lens at the top of the microscope which magnifies by 10X
Stage
Platform which holds the specimen
Objective lens
One of 3 lenses which magnify by 4, 10 or 20X
Slide
Glass rectangle to hold the specimen
Cover slip
Small glass square which covers the specimen
Stain
Used so that a specimen can be seen more clearly
Iodine
Used so that a specimen can be seen more clearly
Methylene blue
Stain used for animal cells
Nucleus
Contains DNA which controls the cell activities
Cytoplasm
The site of chemical reactions
Cell membrane
Controls what substances go in and out of a cell
Vacuole
Stores dissolved salts and sugars
Cell wall
Supports the cell and helps it keep its shape
Chloroplast
Where sugars are made in the cell by photosynthesis
Micrometre
1/1000th of a mm (1mm = 1000 µm)
Structure
Describes what a part of a cell is like
Function
Describes the job that a structure does
Specialised
Adapted for a particular function
Multi-cellular
Made of many cells
Tissue
A group of specialised cells
Organ
A structure containing different types of tissue
Organ system
A group of organs working together
